Shnaider beats Fernandez in Tokyo to claim sixth straight WTA final
TOKYO: Russia’s Diana Shnaider overcame a second-set collapse to beat Canada’s Leylah Fernandez 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday and claim the Pan Pacific Open title in Tokyo. Shnaider eased through the first set but looked in trouble after losing the second. She had to defend three break points early in the decider before clinching victory in two hours and 18 minutes. The 22-year-old has now won six straight finals on the WTA tour.
Shnaider said after the match that she wanted to thank and congratulate her coach, who was with her in Tokyo, for achieving their first title of the season. She added that the win meant a lot and was a great achievement and a great finish to the season.
Fernandez was playing in her second straight final after losing to world number one Elena Rybakina at the Ningbo Open last week. The Canadian, who won the Singapore Open in September, congratulated Shnaider and called it an amazing week and a great match. She said she hoped the two would have many more battles like this one.
Shnaider controlled the first set with aggressive tennis and strong serving. Fernandez responded in the second set by extending rallies and forcing Shnaider into errors, taking it 7-5. The decisive moment came early in the third set when Shnaider saved three break points. She then regained control, broke Fernandez’s resistance and closed out the match 6-2.
The win underlined Shnaider’s ability to perform under pressure and her strong record in finals. For Fernandez, the defeat was disappointing but her run to another final showed her consistency and form. The match lasted two hours and 18 minutes and featured several shifts in momentum.
In other tennis news, Carlos Alcaraz reached his first Vienna final, where he will face Alex de Minaur after Alexander Zverev was upset.
